Rubicon Valley Stage Coach Line
Our two amazing tours
Rubicon High Country Sheep Farm is the gateway to the Otarama look out. Viewing is a must as it is Canterbury's own 8th wonder of the world
Panoramic views of the mighty Waimakariri Canyon and the magnificent Southern Alps Mountains
Otarama is steeped in history with the construction of the Midland Railway. There was a former Railway Station at the Otarama where it was the actual end of the Railway Line in 1895 which was situated on the Farm.
From the lookout you can see the Otarama tunnel or known as No 1 Tunnel situated at the bottom of the Otarama Bank.
This was commenced by the Midland Railway Line and completed by the Government after 1900. Otarama tunnel is one of 16 tunnels constructed through the mountains and is 80.1 meters long.
Otarama is 7km from the town of Springfield and was a popular destination for excursion trains in the 1890's. The general public would take a day out in the Mountains with the options of short coach rides to view the construction of the railway line over the mile of 6 tunnels and the building of the Viaduct.
Even today this area is popular with Tourists traveling by train over the Trans Alpine Scenic Train journey to the West Coast.
